When Warner Brothers and Zack Snyder decided to get together to destroy WATCHMEN, they forgot that they didn’t exactly have rights to the film. Those belonged to Fox, who recently filed suit against WB. A few days ago, the two groups reached a settlement, the details of which are now revealed.
-Fox gets an upfront cash payout of between $5 million and $10 million.
-Fox gets “a gross participation in WATCHMEN that scales between 5% and 8.5%, depending on the film’s worldwide revenues.”
-Fox gets to participate “as a gross player in any sequels or spinoffs.”
-Warner Bros. gets to release the film on time and without Fox’s logo.
Good lord WB got hosed. It pays to check with your legal department that you have rights to a film before you spend hundreds of millions of dollars making and marketing it.
